How to Use Click Limits in UseClick
Set maximum click limits for your links to control access and create scarcity.
What are Click Limits?
Click Limits allow you to set a maximum number of times a short link can be clicked before it automatically stops working. Once the limit is reached, visitors see a customizable message instead of being redirected to the destination. This feature is perfect for creating scarcity, limiting access to exclusive content, controlling resource usage, or running limited-availability campaigns.
Why Use Click Limits?
Create Scarcity
Drive urgency by limiting access to "first 50 people" or "limited to 100 downloads"—proven to increase conversion rates.
Limited Resources
Control access to resources with limited capacity like event tickets, consultation slots, or download bandwidth.
Exclusive Access
Limit early access to products, beta programs, or VIP content to the first X people who click.
A/B Testing Control
Ensure each variant in your A/B test receives equal traffic by setting the same click limit for all variants.
Cost Management
Prevent unexpected costs from pay-per-click campaigns or third-party integrations by capping clicks.
Track Distribution
Know exactly how many people accessed your content without needing complex analytics.

Understanding Click Counting
What Counts as a Click?
- Counts: Every successful redirect to your destination URL
- Counts: Repeat visits from the same person (unless tracking unique visitors)
- Counts: Bot traffic and crawlers
- Does NOT count: Failed redirects or error pages
- Does NOT count: Link preview fetches from social media platforms (when possible)
Monitoring Click Count
View your current click count in your dashboard:
- Links list shows: "25/100 clicks" progress indicator
- Link analytics page displays detailed click history
- Dashboard sends notifications when approaching limit (at 80% and 95%)
Managing Click-Limited Links
Increasing the Click Limit
If your link is approaching its limit or has already reached it:
- Edit the link
- Go to "Click Limit" section
- Increase the maximum number (e.g., from 100 to 200)
- Click "Save Changes"
The link reactivates immediately with the new limit.
Removing the Click Limit
- Edit the link
- Toggle off the "Click Limit" switch
- Save your changes
The link now works indefinitely without click restrictions.
Resetting Click Count
Currently, you cannot reset the click count without creating a new link. However, you can:
- Increase the limit to accommodate more clicks
- Remove the limit entirely to allow unlimited clicks
- Create a new link with a fresh count if needed
Customizing Limit Reached Messages
- Edit your link
- In the "Click Limit" section, find "Custom limit message"
- Enter your message (e.g., "This offer has sold out! Join our waitlist for the next batch.")
- Save your changes
Default message: "This link has reached its maximum click limit and is no longer available."
Common Use Cases
1. Limited Ticket Sales
Scenario: Offering 50 free tickets to an exclusive virtual event.
Solution:
- Create link:
uclick.to/free-tickets - Set click limit: 50
- Custom message: "All free tickets have been claimed! Purchase regular tickets at [link]"
Result: Creates urgency and ensures exactly 50 people get free access. Link automatically closes when limit is reached.
2. Download Limits for Digital Products
Scenario: Free e-book giveaway limited to first 100 downloads.
Solution:
- Create link:
uclick.to/free-ebook - Set click limit: 100
- Custom message: "This free promotion has ended. Purchase the e-book at our store!"
Result: Controlled distribution with automatic cutoff after 100 downloads.
3. Early Bird Access
Scenario: First 25 customers get early access to a new product launch.
Solution:
- Create link:
uclick.to/early-access - Set click limit: 25
- Destination: Early access signup page
- Custom message: "Early access is now full. Stay tuned for public launch!"
Result: Exclusive access for exactly 25 people, building anticipation and rewarding early adopters.
4. A/B Testing with Equal Distribution
Scenario: Testing two landing pages with exactly 500 visitors each.
Solution:
- Create two links with click limits of 500 each
- Link A:
uclick.to/test-a→ Landing Page A (limit: 500) - Link B:
uclick.to/test-b→ Landing Page B (limit: 500) - Use alternating links or random distribution in your campaign
Result: Ensures equal sample sizes for statistically valid A/B testing.
5. Consultation Slots
Scenario: Offering 10 free 30-minute consultations this month.
Solution:
- Create link:
uclick.to/free-consult - Set click limit: 10
- Destination: Calendly booking page
- Custom message: "All consultation slots are filled. Check back next month!"
Result: Automatic booking cutoff when all 10 slots are claimed.
Best Practices
✅ DO:
- Communicate the limit: Tell your audience it's limited (e.g., "First 100 only!") to create urgency
- Set realistic limits: Base your limit on actual capacity or reasonable scarcity
- Monitor progress: Check click counts regularly to adjust marketing or prepare for sellout
- Write helpful limit messages: Include alternatives or next steps when the limit is reached
- Combine with expiration: Add a deadline to ensure the campaign ends even if limit isn't reached
- Test first: Create a test link with a low limit (e.g., 5 clicks) to verify behavior
❌ DON'T:
- Set limits too low: If your limit is reached in minutes, you may miss valuable audience engagement
- Use fake scarcity: Setting unrealistically low limits to manipulate users damages trust
- Forget to increase limits: If demand exceeds expectations, be ready to increase the limit quickly
- Ignore near-limit notifications: Prepare backup plans or follow-up campaigns before hitting 100%
- Count on perfect accuracy: Some bot traffic or link previews may inflate counts slightly
Click Limits + Other Features
| Feature Combination | How It Works | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Click Limit + Expiration | Link stops after X clicks OR expiration date (whichever first) | "First 100 or until Friday" limited-time offers |
| Click Limit + Password | Users enter password, then clicks count toward limit | Secure access to limited resources for specific groups |
| Click Limit + Geo-Targeting | Separate click limits per geographic region | "First 50 per country" regional campaigns |
| Click Limit + A/B Testing | Each variant can have its own click limit | Ensure equal sample sizes in multivariate tests |
Troubleshooting
Link stopped before reaching limit
Solutions:
- Check if link expiration is also enabled (expires at date OR limit)
- Verify you didn't manually disable the link
- Check dashboard for any error notifications
Click count seems inaccurate
Solutions:
- Social media platforms sometimes fetch link previews (may add 1-3 clicks)
- Bots and crawlers count toward your limit
- Check analytics to see actual traffic sources and patterns
Can't set click limit (option greyed out)
Solutions:
- Verify you're on a paid plan (Starter or higher)
- Check subscription status in Account Settings
- If recently upgraded, log out and back in to refresh permissions
Need to reset click count
Solutions:
- Increase the limit instead of resetting (maintains historical data)
- Create a new link with the same destination if you need a fresh count
- Contact support for special cases requiring count resets
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see who clicked the link?
UseClick provides aggregate analytics (location, device, browser) but doesn't identify individual users for privacy reasons. You'll see total clicks and demographics, but not "who" specifically.
What happens to analytics after reaching limit?
All previous click data remains in your dashboard with full analytics. Attempts to access the link after reaching the limit are tracked as "blocked" in your analytics.
Can the same person click multiple times?
Yes. Click limits count ALL clicks, not unique visitors. If one person clicks 10 times, it counts as 10 clicks toward your limit. Use unique tracking features for different behavior.
Can I set different limits for different countries?
Not directly. However, you can create separate links with geo-targeting and individual click limits per region. Example: uclick.to/offer-us (limit: 100) and uclick.to/offer-uk (limit: 50).
Will bots count toward my limit?
Yes. Most bot traffic counts toward the click limit. UseClick filters some obvious bots, but sophisticated bots or crawlers may still increment the counter.
Can I get notified when limit is reached?
Yes! UseClick sends notifications at 80%, 95%, and 100% of your click limit. Ensure notifications are enabled in your Account Settings.
What's the maximum click limit I can set?
You can set click limits up to 1,000,000 clicks. For most use cases, limits range from 10-10,000 clicks.
Next Steps
